This recipe is based on mochi, a Japanese rice cake that consists of glutinous rice pounded into a solid, but soft shape by a wooden mallet to give it a chewy and soft texture. Sometimes they are wrapped by, or filled with various ingredients such as cheese, vegetables, meat, fruit, seaweed, or sauce, and they can even be grilled.
