MamaIdle Updating...
This article is about an updating Cooking Mama game, or an updating part of a Cooking Mama game. The contents may change, and spoilers may be revealed.

Cooking Mama: Cookstar (originally titled Cooking Mama: Coming Home for Mama) was a game that was developed by 1st Playable Productions and published by Planet Digital Partners and Raven's Court. It was originally released for the Nintendo Switch on March 31, 2020, and then the PlayStation 4 on March 25, 2021, against the wishes of Office Create Corp. Due to legal issues between Office Create Corp. and Planet Digital Partners concerning the development of the game, Cooking Mama: Cookstar was initially pulled from sale in 2020.[1] Although it returned to stores for some time, it was withdrawn permanently in November 2022 after the lawsuit was decided in Office Create's favor.[2]

As an outsourced game developed outside of Office Create Corp., there is no Japanese release for this title and the selection of recipes has also differed to appeal better towards the Western audience.

Development and legal issues[]

  • The release of the game was revealed on April 15th, 2020 to be unauthorized by the company due to its poor quality performance and release for the PS4, both of which were against Office Create's intentions. Office Create had terminated Planet Digital Partners' license and took legal action against the latter in order to protect their IP rights, customers, and the Cooking Mama series.[3]
  • This is the first game not to be developed by Office Create, who were putting all of their efforts into Cooking Mama: Let's Cook! at the time. However, Office Create is still credited with being involved in the development of Cooking Mama: Cookstar.
  • Prior to its official announcement, the title was leaked on a German site.[4][5]
  • This is both the first game in the series released on the Nintendo Switch and the first game not to be a Nintendo-exclusive outside of Cooking Mama: Let's Cook!.
  • Cooking Mama: Cookstar marks the return of the Cooking Mama franchise after five years of hiatus.
  • The game was briefly on the Nintendo eShop, but was pulled off due a premature release according to developers[6][7]. However, digital and physical copies of the game have been pulled from sale indefinitely by Office Create.
  • A PlayStation 4 release was planned and advertised by Planet Digital Partners, but it was revealed to have been unauthorized by Office Create. It was thought to be unlikely to be released, due to Cooking Mama mainly staying on Nintendo consoles for over a decade. However, despite Office Create cancelling their contract with Planet Entertainment in 2020, Raven's Court began selling the PS4 version in 2021, against Office Create's wishes of not wanting a Mama game on a different console.
  • Consequently on October 3, 2022, the International Chamber of Commerce International Court of Arbitration (ICC) ruled that Planet Entertainment had infringed on Office Create's trademarks and was financially viable for false advertising by featuring Office Create's logo on the game without approval. Planet Entertainment was legally forbidden from "selling, passing off, inducing, or enabling others to sell or pass off any product as a Cooking Mama product and/or otherwise suggesting any association with Office Create or the Cooking Mama franchise."[8] As a result, Cooking Mama: Cookstar was withdrawn from the PlayStation Store by the following month.
  • In the following months leading up to the lawsuit verdict, Planet Entertainment redesigned the assets of Cooking Mama: Cookstar and released a new game under the title Yum Yum Cookstar. While the gameplay mechanics were modeled after Cooking Mama: Cookstar, all other aspects have been changed to remove any branding related to Office Create or the Cooking Mama franchise.
